I am a Doctor with a background in General Medicine and trained as a General Practitioner (Family Physician). I studied at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary, University of London and graduated with both a Medical Degree and Bachelor of Science degree in 2001.
My training
The Royal London Hospital
During my training I did rotations in General Medicine, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Renal Medicine, Psychiatry and Paediatrics at the Royal London Hospital. I then embarked on several more years of training to finally become a General Practitioner.
But unlike many other doctors in my profession, this is just the beginning of my story. I have other skills and attributes that really defines who I am. If you are interested then please read on.
Added clinical experience
Dermatology
During the course of my work I noticed that many doctors including myself had limited experience, training and knowledge in managing skin problems. Knowing this as a weakness, I took time out to do a Diploma in Practical Dermatology at the Royal London Hospital. I then spent another further 2 years working 1 day a week at the Royal London Hospital under the supervision of Dr Portia Goldsmith and Professor Rino Cerio.
After this I Co-ran the Tower Hamlets Dermatology Clinical Assessment Service (Dermatology CAS) for many years. All of these opportunities cemented my knowledge, skills and experience in Dermatology, a skill that my patients benefit from every day.
My passion
Teaching & Training
I obtained my Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education and became a GP Trainer. Using my skills I enabled the Barkantine Practice to get its training status, something they hold on to this very day. I was also part of the immensely popular Tower Hamlets Vocational Training Scheme.
I have always believed the future of our nation’s health lies in enthusing and educating the next generation of Doctors to take up a career in General Practice. Having now left the Barkantine practice I continue to train at the Burnham Practice and we have extended our training ethos to help support and train the doctors and medical students of the future .
Healthcare leadership
CCG Board member
Recognising national and local policies often dictate what our patients can and cannot get, I was elected on to the Tower Hamlets CCG Board representing the isle of Dogs (Canary Wharf) for nearly 4 years.
Having won CCG of the year Tower Hamlets CCG was seen as one of the most progressive CCGs in the country. As a board member I chaired the Planned Care and Acute Transformation Board. During my long tenure this gave me experience in redesigning existing services to make them more patient friendly and efficient with a reduction in both waiting times and costs.
Projects i was directly involved with included the annual GP Network Incentive Schemes, redesign of the gastroenterology pathway, Commissioning of and redesign of Dermatology pathways, oversteer on MECS services and countless more. I was also the Tower Hamlets lead on the Diagnostics and Imaging working group.
My Journey
GP & a Partner
Truth be told, I never wanted to be a GP! I was always interested in General and Respiratory Medicine having been the House Officer and SHO to Professor Neil Barnes and Dr John Moore-Gillon. However, having completed my GP training at Jubilee Street Practice under the guidance of Dr Sally Hull, I knew where my passion would lie.
I worked as a GP at Jubilee Street Practice for nearly 4.5 years before joining the Barkantine Practice in its infancy. Here I became a partner and was there for nearly 12 years as it transitioned from a PCT run practice to a fully fledged independent APMS practice. My senior roles whilst there included Education and Training of new GPs as well as Clinical Governance and Prescribing. I would also act to provide a second opinion on managing complex skin conditions and help run the business side of General Practice. I was involved in dealing with complaints and also lead for CQC Medicines management.
Due to my background and experience in paediatrics I used to run the baby clinic and also provide a joint injection service.
In October 2019, I left the Barkantine Practice to join a good friend and ex-colleague at the Burnham Practice in Burnham-on-Crouch.
